Genre Posters

September 28, 2015 By Ashley Schroeder

Hey hey all!! Ok, so did you ever have one of those  – oh shoot – moments in the middle of a lesson, but then THAT moment passes and immediately turns into a FABULOUS idea that you MUST DO IMMEDIATELY?!?!  Well that is EXACTLY what happened to me last week with my genre posters!! . . .
Let me tell you what happened! And then I’ll SHOW you all about it!….

Below is a bit of a snap shot of the genre posters that I have been using in my classroom as WAY more than just a poster on the wall – especially NOW!

I have a reading focus wall in my classroom that the kiddos use as a reference ALL week long {aligning to our reading series, Reading Wonders}, and you can see one of my genre posters hanging below describing what informational text is.  My kids refer to these posters SO much especially when they have to PROVE what makes a text the genre that it is!

Here is an even better look at the genre posters that I have prepped and ready to change out on to my focus wall each week.  They are the full size of one sheet of paper and I have them each laminated so they last from school year to school year.

The full list of genres included in this genre poster pack is:
Fiction
Nonfiction
Fantasy
Realistic Fiction
Fable
Folktale
Myth
Drama
Informational
Biography
Autobiography
Narrative Nonfiction
Poetry
Reference
Mystery
Fairy Tale
Adventure
Historical Fiction
Science Fiction
Tall Tales
But like I said, these posters, are MUCH more than just posters that I hang on the wall each week.  In my genre poster pack, you will also see how I have made these posters an ongoing and interactive part of our genre lessons from week to week.
Below you can see a snap shot of the interactive notebook resources that I have included in this set.  Each genre poster is included in a smaller version so the kiddos can glue it into their interactive notebooks to have as a reference AND I include a page for a text list for each genre.  As you read a tall tale, add the title of that tall tale to your text list! Perfect connection!

Here’s a great shot at one of my students’ interactive notebooks in action as well as the coordinating colored genre poster from our focus wall.  The students get the EXACT same poster to add to their interactive notebooks for  EASY and seamless reference for them!

So here’s where my NEW idea comes in!!! I wanted ALL of my reading kiddos {be sure to watch the video for more of an explanation of this!} to have access to the genre posters  – not just my homeroom kiddos! I thought out loud to myself, mid lesson “oh I should print these for you to keep in your reading folder”.  Then my teacher and realist brain goes – “nope, those will be crunched and lost in .5 seconds.”    Then I thought – “OH!! I will shrink them down and put them on a ring!!! You can keep them in your reading bags!! {much like a reading bin}”  Then I was off running to the copy machine and firing up the laminator and here I am sharing it with you all!
CHECK THEM OUT!!  . . . .

They’re tiny!! I printed 4 to a page, 2 sided, as well, and it used less than 3 pages per kiddo!!

Would you have to print an entire class set? Of course not!! – I plan to keep a set of 3-4 of these at the guided reading table, too!! You can have a set of 3-4 also accessible in a reading basket for your kiddos to use during read to self, or even ready to someone! These can be used in SO many ways!

I finished up laminating and “ringing” mine all together just hours ago at school and I can’t WAIT to share this tool with my kiddos tomorrow!

Wonderful! I purchased them a few weeks ago! How did you get them to be 4 on the page?
