Back to School Bash with a FREEBIE!

September 1, 2015 By Ashley Schroeder

Hey hey all! My friends and I at the Elementary Entourage and I are bringing you a BACK TO SCHOOL BASH! We have got FREEBIES GALORE for you to use as you head back to school!!
Now I’m among the crew that has been back to school for a bit at this point.  I went back officially on August 17th, and I’m loving my new group of kiddos.  We are finding our groove, and I’ve been doing a variety of activities that have acted as fabulous pre assessment and formative data including my FAST FACT SCOOT FREEBIE!
One of the most important pieces of 2nd grade math expectations is FACT FLUENCY for addition and subtraction through 20.  We play a TON of math games in my math class, and the focus of the majority of those math games is to BUILD FACT FLUENCY!!   One my 2nd graders can master those facts, the easier it is for us to move on to the JUICIER and more challenging math tasks in 2nd grade!
With that being said, we also play a lot of SCOOT in my classroom! And the first week of school, I like to use my FAST FACT SCOOT as a benchmark tool to see where are my 2nd graders with fact fluency?!
Do you see the little timer on the cover page? The KEY element of this fact activity for the beginning of the year is FLUENCY!  Sure, most of my kiddos can solve 4+4 but can they solve it fluently? in just a few seconds?  That’s what this fast fact activity is set to answer for you!

In the image above, you can see that there are fast fact fluency sets for addition and subtraction, and I use this set a few different ways.  But in all of the ways that I implement these fast fact cards, I focus on the students’ ACCURACY and FLUENCY for these facts.

Here are the ways that I have used this set of fast fact scoot!
1. As traditional scoot (pictured below) allowing only a certain amount of time for the kids to be at each fact card and to answer each fact.  As the year goes on, I will DECREASE the amount of time that I give them to answer these facts as my expectations go up!
2. I have the kids stay at their seats and they each get a fact card.  I give them a certain amount to time to answer, and then say PASS IT! Then they pass the card to the next friend and the timer starts again!
3. Use your projector! I just put one card at a time under the document camera for the whole class to see and answer, give them a few seconds to answer, and then pull the card away!  The SPEED aspect has the kids so excited and engaged, and it truly is a GREAT tool for assessment to see which kiddos need more work with fact fluency!

If you would like to try this FAST FACT FLUENCY SCOOT for FREE you can click the image below to snag the ADDITION version to help you collect some fact fluency data on your kiddos!!

Annnnnd if you like this activity, you might like the FULL pack that it comes from which you can take a closer look at HERE in my store or by clicking the image below!
Thanks so much for reading and now hop on through my friends’ posts, too to see what goodies, tips, tricks, and freebies they’re bringing your way!!
