WEEKEND WARRIORS – SCOOT with a SCOOT JR Twist!

August 30, 2014 By Ashley Schroeder

Hey all! I’m here today along with my Weekend Warrior bloggy friends to bring your our Back to School COOOOOL posts full of goodness! On the last weekend of every month, we like to send you hopping around our blogs for a whole lot of fabulous ideas! This month, we’re bringing you tips, tricks, time savers, ideas, and products to keep your back to school season as coooool as possible! 🙂

So if you follow me on Instagram or Facebook – you’ve seen my newest idea popping up a time or two . . . SCOOT JR!! I just wanted to take a few minutes to explain the what and why to you all and even tell you where my inspiration for it came from!

{Click any image in the post to take a closer look in my store!}

WHAT IS IT?!?!? SCOOT JR is an idea that was born after talking to my sweet colleague, Maribeth! We were talking about HOW ON EARTH I would ever do math rotations this year with 29 kids.  I just don’t have the space to have my designated station spots like in years past.  We were bouncing lots of ideas and problem solving off of each other, and I brought up about how I would LOVE to have one of my designated math stations be SCOOT – just changing the skill based on the weeks’ lessons!  You all know that I have created dozens and dozens of Scoot task card sets that I use with my kiddos, and I wanted to make SCOOT part of our math rotation routine, but I just can’t have that many kiddos up and SCOOTING at once!

SOOOO Maribeth suggested . . . can they take it to their seats?! LIGHT BULB! I thought . . .AH HA! I will create SIMILAR sets of scoot task cards that the kids can arrange themselves on/around their desks and they can SCOOT from one card to the next with a Scooting Skittle! (I love alliteration, but you can also use just a counter or anything you use for game pieces!)  It’s engaging – it’s fun – it includes task cards just like SCOOT, but they’re smaller and there’s less of them . . . .soooo SCOOT JR. was born!!

The kids each have their own set of scoot cards and their own response sheet to SCOOT at their seats! They’re held accountable for scooting to and solving each task card, but it’s just on a little bit smaller and more controlled scale! (a bit more Ashley style) 🙂

I also plan on using my SCOOT JR. cards as a tool for reteaching, as well! When a kiddo doesn’t do so hot on a SCOOT set of cards, I can pull the similar SCOOT JR set for them to try again and for me to use to drive my small group instruction the next day! It’s perfect!

I kind of love it.  I cannot WAIT to launch math stations to be able to teach this to my kids!

My first set of Math SCOOT and  . . . . SCOOT JR! is available in my store, but there will be MANY more sets to come for math AND grammar and language, too!

Here’s a closer look at my math set in my store! It includes SCOOT and SCOOT JR for the following math skills for second graders:

Skip Counting
Place Value
Word Problems
Comparing
Fact Practice

Each SCOOT set has large task cards to be placed around the room and each corresponding SCOOT JR set of cards fits on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper for the kiddos to have their WHOLE set of task cards in one place, ready to cut and SCOOT!

Here is a closer look at each set included in my first SCOOT and SCOOT JR pack!!

It’s definitely one of those resources that I couldn’t get printed fast enough to get set to use in my classroom! Stay tuned for more SCOOT JR pictures of the kiddos in action super soon as math stations get launched in our classroom soon! 🙂 I hope you’re as excited about it as I am!

NOW!! – – – head over to my sweet bloggy friends’ and fellow Weekend Warriors’ posts, too to see how they are making Back to School COOOOOOL this year, too!
