Language Arts Activities for Back to School

August 4, 2014 By Ashley Schroeder

Are you ready to put a big ol’ CHECK in for your back to school lesson plans?!
Check out my BACK TO SCHOOL WORKOUTS! I’ve got you covered from sentences to telling time to writing prompts!
I took myself to Starbucks – land of coffee deliciousness and productivity.
I just wanted to bring you a quick highlight of what’s inside!
This ELA Workout includes practice and activities for:
Parts of Speech (with anchor charts!)
Complete Sentences
ABC Order
Word Building (spelling)
and Writing Prompts
{click any image below to take a closer look at this new product in my store!}
Here is a closer look at Powerful Parts of Speech! . . .

The kiddos will sort nouns and verbs activity cards and record them on their recording sheet. I’ve also included anchor charts to go along with this part of the pack!

There is also a noun/verb flip flap book for the students to have additional noun and verb sorting practice! My kids LOVE flip flap books! They’re such a great alternative to a practice page or worksheet!

Next up is Kick it Complete Sentences!
As you can see, there are colorful AND ink friendly versions of each activity.  The kiddos will sort sentence cards as a complete or a not complete sentence.  They will record the complete sentences AND add proper punctuation and capitalization to each.  There is also additional complete sentence practice page provided for additional independent practice, as well.

AWARD WINNING ABC ORDER!

The students will have the opportunity to arrange 18 school themed vocabulary words into ABC order with a small group OR independently as this set of ABC order practice includes 2 sets of word cards that will work for both of those options! This activity includes 2 sets of word cards for a small group OR for students to practice independently, a response sheet, a key, and an ink friendly printing option.

Writing Prompt Workouts!

These are PERFECT to collect writing samples from your kiddos in those first days of school!

There are 3 different prompts:
What are you excited about this year?
What is one goal you have for this year and how do you plan to reach your goal? AND
What do you want to work on this year?

Each prompt is provided on a colorful AND ink friendly version for printing convenience AND each prompt is provided on a few different versions of writing paper, depending on your kiddos’ hand writing readiness! You can see the varied writing paper pictured above!

These prompts also also for great goal setting for your students for the new school year!

Lastly – Word Building Workout!
Your kiddos will have the opportunity to arrange letter tiles for each of the 8 provided word building activity pages.  The letter tiles ALL will spell ONE large WINNING word that they will have to try and figure out by using ALL of the tiles! They will also use the tiles to spell smaller, 2, 3, 4, and 5 letter words to practice spelling those high frequency words and other commonly used words that they should be able to spell automatically.  This is GREAT spelling practice for the first weeks of school! Here is a close up of one of the 8 different pages!
Can you tell what the WINNING word is?! Don’t worry.  I’ve included a key. Wink 😉
It’s the perfect way to get your first week(s) of school organized in a fun and engaging way for your new 2nd graders! You can click below to head to my store to take a closer or look or to snag it on sale during the TPT BTS sale Aug 4th and 5th!!

Oh my gosh those mini fruit pizzas look AMAZING!! I'm so jealous of you having berries right now. The only fruit we have in New Zealand at the moment are apples and oranges. Which are nice sure, but not as nice as berries!
I always giggle when I read that someone is eating "kiwi". A kiwi is our native bird – the symbol of our country. If you were to eat one you'd be locked in prison!! What you have there is a kiwifruit. (Just a cheeky piece of totally useless information for ya!)

All the best with the sale! I've checked out already. Make sure to stop by my blog tomorrow and link up with what you bought! I'm hosting a linky party called "Show us your stash!"
