Trade and Grade!

April 25, 2014 By Ashley Schroeder

Hi friends! It’s time for the Trade and Grade blog hop, again! Before I get into grading the fantabulous product that I got to try out in my classroom, though, I have to give a huge shout out and thank you to Amanda from The Primary Gal for organizing this blog hop and TONS of other fun events that we do as a bloggy crew throughout the month!! THANK YOU, Amanda, for all of your organization, hard work, and fabulous ideas! We appreciate you!

So  – without further delay – it’s time for the April Trade and Grade!!

I was ridiculously lucky enough to get to swap products this month with my sweet, sweet Vegas ROOMIE and friend, Angie from Mrs. Olson’s Lucky Little Learners!!
You mayyyy (and if you don’t, you SHOULD) know Angie from her FANTASTIC Interactive Math notebooks! The girl has been on a roll creating one after another!! Right now, she has FOUR DIFFERENT ONES to use with your kiddos!! You can click the image below to head to Angie’s store to take a closer look! You will honestly be SO very sorry if you don’t!!
OH AND GUESS WHAT!! – HOT OFF OF THE PRESSES . . .  She just added a FIFTH!!
Angie promises that this one is her BEST ONE YET!! 🙂 I’m not sure how she can top her first 4, but I can’t wait to use it!! <3
But after you check the notebooks out at her store – – – come back here to hear all about how I used the telling time and geometry INs (Interactive Notebooks) in my classroom!!
So as I was getting organized with Angie’s notebooks, I decided that I would bind the 3 interactive notebooks that I had at the time (now I own all 4!!).  They are all bound in one book now, and it made it easy to grab, note, and to SEE everything that these interactive notebook resources have to offer for my classroom! Confession: never have I ever used the binding machine at school before . . .I googled it so I could have my INs of Angie’s all together! 🙂

I even have a file folder on my DESKTOP of Angie’s INs, and I am totally planning on incorporating her INs regularly in my classroom next year!

Before I show you the action shots, I want to show you a few resources that the INs include that, because it’s the fourth marking period, my kiddos didn’t necessarily need as a resource at this point in the year.  When I use these notebooks starting at the beginning of the year, Angie has included crystal clear and awesomely labeled money posters that I will use and hang in my classroom or, as I plan to do next year (my kids already have one this year), I’m going to shrink them to fit all 4 on one page and add them right into the kiddos’ INs as an easy reference all year long!  I love how simple and what a GREAT visual they are!

Another option that Angie provides is coins to cut and use in different activities in the Interactive Money notebook.  Since we were using her INs as a review, AND because we do a math rotation/math workshop style math block, we simply didn’t have the time to cut out coins for our lessons, however, there are sheets of coins for your kiddos to use to count and match totals throughout the activities in the IN.

One of my other favorite parts about these resources, as you see above, is that Angie is AWESOME about adding photos to all of her IN resources, so you can see exactly how each page should look when it’s put to work! It makes it so easy for me – a visual learner! – to put these sets RIGHT TO WORK! Thanks so much for taking the time to add those photos, Angie!! I LOVE it!

Another fact that I LOVE about these resources and about their author<3 is that they were created with TEACHERS IN MIND! Angie takes so much time and effort to hear from US! She includes what WE want to see and what will be most valuable for us and our students as far as a math interactive notebook, and my goodness, do these notebooks ever deliver just that!!

Ok – now for some action shots! As I alluded too, I use a math workshop in my classroom.  I have 3 homogeneously mixed groups that rotate through 3 math stations every single day.  To incorporate Angie’s INs but yet still keep my math stations structure in the classroom, I did some of the notebook building whole group and some of the activities in our small group stations.  You will see that I color coded the activities that we used – red was for my basic group, yellow was for my proficient group, and green was for my advanced group.

The pictures will highlight an array of basic to more advanced activities from the time and money INs.  Like I also mentioned, I can’t wait to use these starting at the beginning of the year next year so I can work my way through the WHOLE set from beginning to end with my kiddos, because one activity just builds so nicely and smoothly onto the next! It is SO easy to scaffold and differentiate with these IN resources!

Ok – – -Action shots! . . .

Here we are, getting our notebooks ready! Hello engaged learners!! #idontevencareaboutthemessitmade

The kiddos were working hard to identify the time in words AND the digital time to match by reading the provided analog clocks!

Then, my higher kiddos took one of the basic telling time activities to the next level – we added an elapsed time twist! I directed them to tell me _______ after or ______ before the given time! We then wrote the elapsed time under the flap!

The set also includes teaching tools like THIS ONE seen below!! My lower level group got to use the clock face and labels included in this resource to add a clock reference tool to their INs.  We glued in the face, labeled the hands, and labeled the minutes that each of the clock numbers stand for!

Here are several more photos that show us working hard on a variety of money practice activities! It was anywhere from as simple as “show me 56 cents” to making change from a given word problem or number story! I’m going to let the photos themselves (and their captions) do most of the talking! . . .

Some of the interactive activities were perfectly timed for us to practice making chamge! The kiddos had to read a word problem and decide the amount of change that would be given back, so it gave us a great opportunity for us to practice our making change using the strategies we had learned in our lessons PLUS apply those strategies using Angie’s INs!

I wish I would’ve had – as I always wish for – more hours in our day or at least more hours in our math block to get to use even MORE of the fabulous activities and resources that Angie’s INs provide, but I’ve already got the ’14-’15 school year in mind as I can’t WAIT to hit the ground running with our INs in the fall! You MUST take a closer look at her Math Interactive notebooks in her store! They are, for sure, some of the most valuable resources I’ve bought on TPT!
Oh – you want to try it out, you said?! Welllll it’s your lucky day!! Click below for a FREE SAMPLE from Angie’s Money Unit Interactive Notebook to try it out today! You will LOVE it!!

I am the proud owner of all of these units, and got lots of ideas on how to use them effectively as we end the year with a BIG review of our second grade concepts! Bravo to both you and Angie for a wonderful collaboration!
