Peaks ‘n Pits of the week behind . . .

September 15, 2012 By Ashley Schroeder

Happy Saturday all!  As I sat down to write this afternoon, I’m in a much more calm, much more situated, and much more routined place than I was a week ago, and I wanted to share a few of the peaks and pits that the week brought me.

All in all, I’m definitely starting to get into the swing of things in my new school, teaching a new grade, in a new city, all while we’re stillll getting settled a bit in our beautiful new house – which I am totally and utterly in LOVE with by the way.  I still can’t really believe it’s mine?!

I’ll start with the Peaks of the week! 🙂

I’ve got a new morning routine that I love – that may or may not include plenty of coffee and lesson planing at my kitchen island before I even leave for work. 🙂 To quote my husband,”whatever makes you happy” is what I’m going for right now, and it’s working!

I also am startinggg to get past the day-to-day survival mode at school.  Not that I don’t have things planned for the whole week – I do.  But mentally, I could only prepare for and keep track of one day at a time . . . until this week! I’m looking into NEXT week already and this week hasn’t even started! That’s a definite peak in my book!

I am IN LOVE with how Daily 5 and CAFE are going in my room.  Love love love it.  NOT in love with my bulletin board, so I’m obviously already just throwing my new ideas into my ’13-’14 file and calling it a day 🙂 … for now!  Here’s a look at my Cafe board (that I don’t love) that has officially begun being built! We’ve got strategies!

Annnd SINCE I’ve found my planning groove, I have been able to add a few  “extra” things to my room based on what my kiddos are needing right now annnd based on what fun, cute, and polka dotted finds I come across on pinterest 🙂  Here are a few extras I’ve added to my room this week . . .

Clock labels that I kind of love . . .sadly, that keyboard is going in the trash in about 2 weeks.  it’s no longer bright enough to keep up with the vibrance that is my classroom environment haha

Brain breaks 🙂 🙂 forgot to take a picture of the cup/label I made  to put them in, but I’m pumped to cha cha with my kids

Quite possibly my favorite peak of the week – WHOLE BRAIN TEACHING!!! O EM to the GEE.  I have added the final WBT elements this week in our classroom, and even some of my boys who are way to cool for school LOVE IT!!

In case you care to know what it is or want to make sense of the signs in my next pic below – here’s one of the most awesome teacher videos I’ve ever seen – My teamie sent it my way this summer – it’s SO how we teach already – which is why I LOVE it – it’s totally ME! Plus my kiddos have responded.  Win Win 🙂

I may or may not have watched this video repeatedly while taking notes.

And here are my signs that I’ve hung one at a time as I’ve introduced them and used them with my kids in the past 2 weeks!:)  I also use the “score board” informally making tallies on our white board easel.

Anyyyywhooo – I am realizing that I could actually keep going about my peaks!! I won’t BUT I’m glad to say that I could!

Pits . . . hmm mid week was rough.  I hadn’t found my groove yet.  I had no weekly evening routine and that was driving me crazy  – I never knew when I’d be home, or when Ryan’d be home, or what was for dinner (even though we have a weekly menu, it didn’t always work when we got home late- grr) annnnd I was simply trying to establish that.  I don’t need “perfection”.  I just need routine! I can appreciate those who don’t need or have it, so please understand that I don’t function without it!!  For example – when Ryan is talking to me when I’m making my coffee (which is its own routine that typically does NOT include Ryan talking to me since we all know how ridiculously early my alarm goes off) – I will manage to mess it up.!! .  . . . which reminds me of THIS that I saw today…

#truth

Anywayyyy my pit was realizing that no evening routine for the last 4 weeks had caught up with me and I was TRYING to establish one including my new gym SO I went to a “Cardio Blast” class to try the classes at my new gym… The class honestly should have been called “Step Tap”.  I’m not exaggerating.  It was terrible – and it was at 7:35.  Junk.  Problem has already been solved though – I loveee the classes at my old gym ANNNND I already have a Strongsville evening class routine soooo I bought the class pass to still go there for classes.  Happy girl 🙂 Again… “whatever makes you happy” was theme of the week annnnd classes at Strongsville do! haha

Lastly – which is kind of a silly pit, more of a bummer, really – Ryan and I have been watching Dexter season 6 – and I’m disappointed about it!  I haven’t once had the “OMG I MUST PLAY THE NEXT EPISODE NOW” reaction that I have had in previous seasons!! Don’t get me wrong – I still HEART Dexter Morgan . . . but I just keep waiting for it to get good!! Last night’s episode got a littttle bit more of an “ohhhhh noooo” reaction from me, so I’ve got hopes for the final 3 episodes.  It’s no season 4 – but what is?! 🙂

hahahah oh so much truth 🙂

Ok – I’ve got the house to myself tonight soooo pizza, coffee and KINDLE (for the first time since starting interview prep in JULY) it is!! I’m either going with Gone Girl – which has been recommended by several orrr Emily Giffin’s Where We Belong<– couldn’t possibly go wrong with that!

Hope your weeks are filled with peaks, too! 🙂 Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
